White folks have an odd smell to us also. So the fascination is mutual. Maybe its because you spend most of your time around white folks. If grow up amongst dogs and one day when to a house filled with cats, the smell would be different and for some reason “different” is hard to except with some people. i.e.- everyone who has to refer to it in a disgusting and insulting manner.

question because I’ve wondered the same thing for a long time too. My first black friend didn’t have that smell but a black dude that I dated did. I also have a best black girlfriend that no no matter what she does, she smells really bad.

There is definately an odor. I’m sure it’s not always due to hygine; there must be a “secretion.”
If most people weren’t so focused on not being offensive, topics like this could actually be discussed. I would like to see a real explanation because there is an actual funk.. What causes it? Maybe more discussion of socio-cultural trends too.. Incarceration percentages and so on. Differences between races should be explored.
When I was at school there was a black girl called Anyaih Binjabuh in my form and as soon as you walked into the same class room as her all you could smell was B.O & it absoulutly STUNK. The first time my old English teacher was teaching us she was retching as it was a hot day and it was worse. I have to admit, this exprience put me off the whole idea of black people and in some more expriences they are quite rude. I think the forum thing was right.

ok i was wondering this for so long, until now when i decided to “research it” So I would remember back during school when I would “lend” someone my pencil (black people). Then when i got it back it would smell really weird. Then after that, years later another black person would use my pencil. That is when i figured that black people have weird smell. LOL! They dont even have to touch something. If you would just smell them they would smell, even if they are the cleanest person in the world. They just have this weird “black odor”

That is a good question. Like.. Its like a smell of fresh grass/B.O/and Salty Water. All mixed together. Mainly cause an African American/Black kid was running today and got angry about missing a basket and tore his shirt off. THATS SOMETHING! Why do blacks get so offended so easily? Maybe not all of them do, but a crap load of them do.
When I lived in South Africa my family had a black maid working for us (we paid her well it was not like slavery, fuck off, she was also very nice I really liked her), and I remember her picking me up one day and bouncing me up and down singing a song or something, and I still can imagine the smell to this day, and I’m certain I’ve noticed that smell from other black people too. Someone commented on it smelling like “hose water and tyres mixed with some other strange smell.”, I’m not sure I can remember what hose water smells like but definately a tyrey smell lol.
I’m not racist at all by the way, and people taking this as racist are just the typical idiots who get offended by anything concerning race. I do however notice lots of people being close-minded racists. The funniest thing is, on a more serious note, that people have for a long time fought racism with racism – you’re as good as the person you’re offended by doing that.
Anyway, about the smell again, I guess it probably must be that natural secretion then. Interesting.

Well, I came to look for an answer since I have felt a really bad smell from black people in many cases and I’ve been wondering if it’s “normal” in them. the last two cases, it was the prom[ night and a black girl friend of my friend passed by me really close and I felt a horrible smell. Then the other day I was watching a movie in class and a black girl sat very close to me and again I felt the same smell. so is it normal in black people to smell bad?, if it’s normal I’d be more comprehensive. It annoys me when people don’t take care of their hygene but if black people can’t help it, then I’d be more comprehensive the next time and instead of moving away from them, I’d maybe try something like putting some lotion in my hand and my hand close to my nose so I can smell the lotion instead of them.
Putting lotion in your hand? Masking any kind of foul odor with a supposedly nicer scent is the most ad nauseum thing a person can do. Who hasnt tried to mask a rancid odor with something fragrant and it backfired horribly?

Wow, with some of the personal, racist comments on here I’m not sure if this is the year 2010 or 1810.
In any case to try an answer the question logically, after extensive travel and spending a lot of time overseas with various cultures, I find that bad or offensive body odour is not specific to any particular race. I’ve never heard of native Africans having any kind of “secretion” that gives them a particular odour. I dated an African girl for a couple of years, and never noticed anything. I met her after she had only been in the country for a couple of years and she smelt no worse than anyone else with decent hygiene. In Australia, it can get as hot in our deserts and plains as in parts of Africa, and the Aborigines can be just as dark skinned. I’ve never smelt a bad odour from any aborigine living out in the bush.
All people sweat however, some worse than others, however a bad diet with a lot of fatty or sugary food will give you a bad smell, as it will come out of your pores, and if you are overweight and sweat more than most, or don’t practice good hygiene, then yes, you will stink, be you black, white, asian or whatever. Certain body odours are linked with diet. For example, many Asian races will eat rice as a staple and include many different oils. Indian people mainly eat various forms of curry with intense spices. This may affect how they smell to people of other races, not native to that country. But the suggestion that African-Americans, born and raised in America, and may have practically no immediate ties to Africa, will somehow smell different simply because of the amount of pigment in their skin, is so ignorant and backward, it’s laughable. I can’t see how a person with black skin, and a person with white skin, will noticeably smell any different, if their dietry intake, hygiene standards and general environment is the same. Also I’ve never met a person from Mexico that smelt like rotten fruit.
A fat white slob, that doesn’t bathe, eats chicken all day and lacks the brain-power needed to remember deodorant, will smell just as bad as anyone else who does the same. I have no scientific sources for any of this, just personal experience.
I agree that people that have a specific diet smell differently. For instance people from Guatemala smell a bit like chilies. People that eat a lot of garlic smell a bit like garlic, just as people that smoke smell like it. Now that aside, I am white and I lived with black people for many years as I was growing up. They do not have a smell there own, they don’t! Yet, there are some that do stink and the reason people might think that it is a common thing to blacks is because the ones that stink smell bad because of their hair care product chooses. Some of those products make me gag from the smell; after people wear that stuff for a wile they don’t smell it any more. Just like smokers don’t know they stick and pot heads and drunks don’t know we can smell them from across the room.

Your comments made me think of a time when I was young. Upon boarding a city bus during a hot downpour, there were many blacks on the bus that stank to high heaven. Granted, I’m not a racist but that smell (which I remember to this day) repulsed me to the point of being biased as far as smells go. It was the most disgusting odor and being sardined in on a city bus like that, I became nauseated. In addition to rancid smelling hair products, there IS a direct correlation to dietary intake. Anything a person does on a consistent bases is indeed going to be central to their overall smell.

I am white. I shower twice a day. I use ivory soap. I wash my hair once a day. I brush my teeth 3 times a day and use listerine. I use polo colonge and ban deoderant. I use DEP hairgel and suave strawberry shampoo. I put clothes on in the morning, I take them off at night and wash them in tide. I think if this is done daily whtever your race, you will not smell. NO rocket science here, if you smell poorly, you are probably not showering enough or cleaning your clothes enough
